SUNSHINE ON CASINO ST. MORITZ

Casino St. Moritz has definitely proved industry critics wrong - despite the difficult market conditions in the alpine and tourist region, the casino is now well established in its host venue. The tough economic period following its launch in 2002 was followed by a steady upwards trend from 2004 and break even in the 2005 fiscal year. In 2006, the casino recorded its best ever results, posting earnings for the year of CHF 544,000. But it now faces its biggest challenge yet - the doubling of the casino tax as of 1 January 2007!

St. Moritz, 13.06.2007 --- The last few years were by no means easy for Casino St. Moritz and its staff. While the casinos in the Swiss border regions and urban agglomerations were producing record results year after year, Casino St. Moritz and the other casinos in the alpine regions struggled to keep their heads above water. In 2003, lack of profitability even forced the closure of the alpine casinos in Arosa und Zermatt.

Yet in St. Moritz, 2003 proved to be the start of the upwards trend. Business processes were optimized and costs streamlined as part of a restructuring program, while new impetus was added by a new management team under the leadership of Argentinean-born Casino Director Gustavo Weidgans. The strategic goal of the Supervisory Board and management was to develop the local market, namely the Engadin region and the important Italian border region around Sondrio, thereby reducing the casinos dependency on tourism. This strategy has clearly paid off, and Casino St. Moritz is now quite literally "on top of the world" both economically as well as geographically! Gross gaming revenues (GGR) for 2006 stood at CHF 4,420,000, an increase of 7% compared with 2005. 40% of GGR was generated at the 6 live gaming tables - the largest table gaming revenue share of all Swiss casinos. Earnings for 2006 reached their highest ever level at CHF 544,000 (+68% year-on-year). Casino St. Moritz has also been recognized by the Swiss Federal Gaming Board for its exemplary social concept offering further confirmation of the casino's strong sense of social responsibility.

This year sees Casino St. Moritz face its biggest challenge yet. In accordance with the strict regulations of the Swiss Federal Gaming Act, the casino's tax rate was doubled from 13.3% to 26.6% with effect from 01.01.2007. At 2006 GGR levels, this will result in an increase of at least CHF 600,000 in annual tax contributions, an amount the casino would have much rather invested in the consolidation and expansion of its market. However, the parliamentary initiatives put forward by Brändli and Bezzola aimed at extending the reduced rate of tax beyond 2006, were unsuccessful. It could now easily take another couple of years before Casino St. Moritz can really talk about lasting recovery.

The first four months of 2007 at least have been very promising and indicate that Casino St. Moritz is ready to take on the challenge set by the Swiss legislator with gross revenues from gaming and F&B services showing an increase of 18% compared to the same period in 2006. This figure again tops the Swiss casino market.

Casino St. Moritz AG is a joint 50% subsidiary of Casinos Austria (Swiss) AG, Zug and Swiss Casinos Holding AG, Zürich. Casinos Austria (Swiss) is, in turn, part of the renowned Casinos Austria International group, whose portfolio includes 75 casinos in 18 countries and on board 14 cruise ships, as well as extensive lottery, sports betting, video lotteries terminals and online gaming products and services. Casinos Austria (Swiss) AG holds interests in 7 casinos in Switzerland including the A casinos in Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen and, most recently, Lugano, the largest portfolio of any operator in the country. Casinos Austria International was first introduced as a potential partner in the early Nineties on the initiative of the Kurverein (Spa Association) in St. Moritz. Following the legalization of casinos in Switzerland, the grand jeu casino finally opened in the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains in December 2002.
